We are thrilled to be building a Natural Playscape on the grounds of Lincoln Log Cabin State Historic Site — a one-of-a-kind outdoor space that invites children to explore, imagine, and connect with the natural world in the spirit of 19th-century rural life.
Drawing inspiration from the landscapes that shaped Abraham Lincoln's childhood and the agricultural heritage of central Illinois, the Playscape will offer children a place to discover, climb, dig, and play in ways that are increasingly rare in modern life — and deeply rooted in the experience of the families who lived and worked here nearly two centuries ago.
The Vision
The Natural Playscape is designed to extend the educational mission of Lincoln Log Cabin into free, unstructured outdoor play. Children will encounter natural elements — logs, boulders, water, plantings — arranged to spark curiosity and imaginative engagement with the landscape and its history.
